What to expect in the initial consultation?

Initial consultation involves a discussion of the person’s symptoms and involves medical and psychiatric assessments. Medical investigations may be required to rule out medical and neurological problems. It is essential to ensure that the rest of the body is healthy in treating the brain. A holistic treatment plan is then discussed.

What does holistic treatment mean for me?

Treatment modalities (options) would depend on multiple factors, including the severity of the symptoms, patient preference, etc. Medication may be prescribed if absolutely necessary or if other treatment modalities such as psychotherapy or lifestyle changes have failed.

I am scared about the medication?

If medication is prescribed, different types of medication and options are discussed with the patient and their possible side effects explored. Treatment needs to be a collaborative process between the patient and the healthcare team to optimise well-being and quality of life.

How do my follow-ups work, and why do I need them?

Ongoing follow-up is necessary to assess psychiatric symptom response and/or response to medication and, in particular, to consider and address any concerns or side effects. Initially, the patient is seen at more regular intervals. Then, once symptoms have stabilised and the patient is happy with and maintaining the treatment, they are seen every 6 months.

Do I need to be on medication forever?

While this is very different from patient to patient, some people can be successfully weaned off the medication under supervision and ultimately no longer require psychiatric care. Others may require chronic treatment.

What if I cannot make it to my appointment and need to cancel?

If you must cancel or reschedule an appointment, the practice requires at least 24-hour notice. Cancellations that occur with less than 24-hour notice or failure to arrive for an appointment will be charged the full fee for the session. Rescheduling will need to be discussed separately as there is a high demand for psychiatry services. While rescheduled appointments will be accommodated as soon as possible, there may be an extended waiting period before the patient can be seen.
